Once upon a time, roughly 14 years ago – back in 1998 – a monster hatched out of his egg in Japan and came to life. He had no idea that he was a monster. You may very well be reading the title of this article and wondering to yourself just who and what in the heck is Domo Kun? It’s actually not that farfetched of a question, all things considered. In fact, up until about a decade ago – or so – most people in the US had absolutely no idea as to who or just what Domo Kun is or was. To better help you understand the viral capacity and reach that this popular Japanese cartoon character represents, and is, we shall take a look at a few key events that easily are part of the propensity behind the quick catapulting of Domo Kun to the worldwide limelight. We shall start at the very beginning, where and how Domo Kun came to be in this world and why he was created in the first place.

Domo Kun Was Entirely Unique & Original

Think back to 1998 in Japan, and the NKH TV channel BS1 and BS2 satellite networks were nearing their ten year anniversary. They decided to create a new mascot for their TV networks to celebrate. The Domo Kun design was catchy and original, and they decided to make him spawned from an egg, molding their logo to look more egg-shaped. They then started airing short episodes that were about half a minute in length featuring Domo Kun as a means of unique station identification. What they never foresaw was how wholeheartedly the public would embrace their new TV mascot. This led up to a full series of episodes that would span several seasons, and the rest is history.

Target Used Him for Promotional Ads for Halloween

Target big box stores would feature Domo Kun everywhere inside as part of a Halloween advertising campaign during the early part of the 2000s. There was everything Domo Kun that one could imagine, from costumes to candy and even dolls and toys. Merchandise from this event is still widely sold online and retains a high collector value.

7-11 Picked Him Up for a National Ad Campaign

Fast forward several years later, and in the latter part of the first decade of the new millennium, the popular convenience store conglomerate, 7-11, would feature him on collector cups as part of a new ad campaign. They also created several episodes featuring Domo Kun. The episodes became so viral that the cups are still sold for high dollar amounts on popular auction websites.
